The Perfection 4990 PHOTO scanner includes an advanced software bundle with Automatic, Home and Professional modes for all user skill levels. "Software Bundle with the Perfection 4990 PHOTO but at this point it is probably the best flat bed scanner available (or the v750, which is the same with the newton glass).Well, friends, here's the latest scoop according to : Canon 5D with Pentacon Globica II Problem with Microtek i800 Heidelberg Linoscan 1450 / Epson 4990 silverfast 6 Agfascan T5000 Plus scanner Epson. though it scans fine when i tape negs to the glass even though that distance is much different that using the v700 holder.Īside from that, no issues other than the lid still not pressing down firmly on prints, so i still have to use a heavy book and white paper when scanning polaroids. i tried using it with the v700 and the scans were much softer, i guess because it wasn't the correct distance from the glass. getting better at it, but the holder for the 4490 was much easier to use. i've started to wear gloves because i have to manhandle the film so much trying to get it flat. it's really difficult to get the film flat, always wants to curl and warp. The one thing i don't particularly like is is the 120 film holder. nice to be able to scan 4x5 and larger in one shot, unlike previously where i had to scan in two halfs. SilverFast detects the originals, scans and aligns them at a right angle automatically. Its intelligent image automation simplifies scanning and image optimization. still, this v700 is at least twice as fast as the 4490, and the scan quality is obviously much better. The SilverFast LaserSoft Imaging SE Plus Scanning Software for Epson Perfection 4990 Photo Scanner is the further development of the entry-level version SilverFast SE. The Perfection 4990 PRO includes a robust software package that makes this scanner the complete digital imaging solution.

so the scanners are getting older but they update the software. i don't think there are any new flatbed scanner designs, except for combo scanner/fax/copier things, because most magazines are all digital now. none of the epson scanners are 'new'.they are all like from 2007. I had to finally stop using my 4490 because of color lines all over the scans, so i got a v700. Also I think on the V500 and V600 one can only load one strip of 120 at a time, whereas on the 4990 I was able to scan six frames at once.Īny one have any experience with the new line of Epson scanners or have anything else to add? Is there something else I should be considering? If anyone in Europe had a 4990 available to sell, I'd love to know about it. Will I notice a difference? The V700 is 4.0 Dmax as well with a substantial bump in the optical resolution. So, which is really comparable to my old 4990? I don't really need the extra resolution since I am scanning 97.2% medium format anyway I am more worried about the Dmax or optical density- my 4990 was rated at 4.0 Dmax, but the V500 and 600 are both only 3.4 Dmax. which is much more than I remember paying for my 4990, and much more than I can spare at the moment!

However, I am in Germany and it seems one's lucky to find a V700 under 500€. According to the Epson website, the V700 has now replaced the 4990. These powerful performers can batch scan multiple slides as well as negatives and photos. I'm looking to replace my old Epson 4990. With image quality that rivals that of a dedicated film scanner, plus the flexibility of a flatbed scanner, all in one affordable product, the Epson Perfection 4990 Photo and 4990 Pro each deliver the ultimate digital scanning solution.
